Backup and restore

Export a backup

Open Settings, then tap "Export & Import". Tap "Export" to choose what goes into the backup file.

The sections you can include:

• SSH profiles - host, port, username, and authentication method.
• SSH keys - all keys from the key manager, including private keys.
• Snippets - saved commands, their tags, and defaults.
• Known hosts - pinned server host keys.
• Terminal settings - colour scheme, font size, and cursor style.
• App preferences - toolbar, action dock, theme, and view options.

Passwords and private keys pasted into profiles are separate opt-ins. You can back up the profiles without including the secrets.

Protect the backup

Tap "Protect with a passphrase" to encrypt the file. The passphrase must be at least 8 characters long and you must type it twice. Without the passphrase, the backup cannot be restored. There is no recovery if you forget it.

If you export secrets without a passphrase, the app asks for confirmation. The file will contain passwords and private keys in plain text. Anyone who can read the file can use them.

Tap "Export backup" and choose where to save it. Afterwards the export screen remembers the date of your last backup, so you can see at a glance how long ago it was.

Restore from a backup

Open Settings, then tap "Export & Import". Tap "Import" and pick a backup file.

The app reads the file and shows what is inside before writing anything. Under "What to import" you see each section and the entries in it, and can tick them individually - "All" and "None" are there for when you want the lot or want to start from nothing.

Entries already on this device are called out separately, under "Entries already on this device". The default is "Keep mine", which leaves the local entry alone and skips the one in the file. "Overwrite" replaces the local entry with the file's. Nothing is overwritten unless you choose it.

Tap "Import" to restore the selected entries. The app reports what was added, replaced, or skipped.

If a profile in the backup refers to an SSH key or jump host that is not in the backup, the app tells you after importing. Those profiles cannot connect until you add the missing key or host.

A backup file must be from Termphin. If the file is not a Termphin backup, or is from a newer version of the app, the app refuses it.
